Week 5) Computer infrastructure, compliance, and documentation

Learning goals

By the end of this week, you should understand:

  • why web data projects require appropriate infrastructure, storage, and monitoring;
  • how reliability, security, and reproducibility affect the value of collected data;
  • the main legal and privacy considerations involved in collecting web data; and
  • how researchers can reduce technical, legal, and ethical risks through design choices.

Lecture

The lecture consists of two parts:

  • Computer infrastructure: compute environments, scheduling, restartable scripts, storage, monitoring, maintenance, and security.
  • Legal considerations: technical access barriers, intellectual property and database rights, terms of service, privacy, GDPR, and risk minimization.

The focus is on making defensible design choices rather than treating web scraping as automatically legal or illegal.

Coaching

  • Online coaching session (#2)
  • Refine the technical, legal, and documentation choices for your team project.
